Bi-curious or bicurious is a term used to describe someone who is questioning or exploring their own sexual orientation, particularly regarding attraction to people of the same gender. It refers to individuals who may identify as heterosexual but have an interest in or curiosity about engaging in same-sex relationships or experiences. The term "bi" in bi-curious is derived from bisexuality, which encompasses attraction to two or more genders.

Being bicurious is often a temporary or transitional stage in a person's sexual exploration and self-discovery. It can involve feelings of curiosity, attraction, or a desire to explore same-sex relationships, without necessarily indicating a firm identification as bisexual or any other sexual orientation. It's important to note that bicurious is not a definitive sexual orientation but rather a descriptor for individuals who are questioning or exploring their own attractions and interests. It is a personal journey of self-discovery, and individuals who identify as bicurious may have different experiences and levels of comfort in exploring their curiosity.

The term can also be used by a primarily monosexual individual who is curious, open, or partakes in relationships with other genders other than that of their usual partner; in which an individual may still be exploring their sexuality.

Flag[]

This pride flag represents bi-curiosity and bi-curious people, colors meaning are the same of the bisexual colours, pink represents homosexuals (gays and lesbians) and blue heterosexuals (straights/hets), while this has no purple in the middle, they aren't essentially bisexuals, white is for doubting/questioning and light-ish stripes for slight feelings and shared experiences.

History[]

The exact origin and the specific moment when the term "bicurious" was coined is difficult to pinpoint, as the development of language and terminology around human sexuality is an ongoing process influenced by cultural shifts and individual experiences. However, the term gained popularity and visibility in the latter half of the 20th century as discussions around sexual orientation and identity expanded. It emerged in the context of the broader LGBTQ+ rights movement and the increased visibility and acceptance of diverse sexual orientations.

During the late 20th century, as societal attitudes toward sexuality began to shift and discussions around sexual orientation became more open, individuals started to explore and identify with different aspects of their own sexuality. This included acknowledging and discussing feelings of curiosity and attraction to genders other than their usual partner.

With the advent of the internet and the rise of online communities and platforms for discussing and exploring sexuality, including online forums, social media, and dating apps, the visibility and recognition of being bicurious further increased. These platforms provided spaces for individuals to connect, share experiences, and seek support or validation for their feelings of curiosity.

Etymology[]

The term started becoming popular after 1984, according to Merriam-Webster, but The New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English and Oxford Dictionaries' Lexico claim that the term was coined in 1990. According to Dictionary.com, the term was first used between 1980 and 1985.
