Graysexual is a sexual orientation on the asexual spectrum, defined as the "gray area" between asexuality and allosexuality.[2][3][4][5][6] There are many ways to be graysexual, which include, but are not limited to:

  1. Strongly identifying with asexuality but occasionally experiencing sexual attraction.[5]
  2. Experiencing sexual attraction, but only rarely. [5][6]
  3. Experiencing sexual attraction, but having a low sex drive.[4][5]
  4. Enjoying sexual relationships, but only under specific circumstances.[5][6]
  5. Experiencing sexual attraction, but very weakly,[6] or experiencing sexual attraction that is not strong enough to be acted upon.[3]
  6. Changing between experiencing sexual attraction, and not experiencing it over a long period of time.[6]
  7. Experiencing attraction that may or may not be sexual, or being unsure if one's attraction is sexual or not.[6][2]
  8. Having had sexual experiences in the past, but those experiences were fleeting and not reflective of one's current sense of self.[3]
  9. Experiencing sexual attraction, but not another important component of sexuality, such as sex drive.[6]

In summary, graysexual individuals experience some semblance of sexuality, but significantly less than allosexual individuals.[3]

Common Definitions[]

Alright, so don't know if this term is already around, but if not, I'm coining it now.

Gray-A

Is there really a line at which point you are asexual?

According to our logo there isn't. Just fuzziness.

So, this thread I dedicate to our fuzzy members who may sometimes feel unsure of their asexuality/sexuality.

–KSpaz, 2006[2]

This term is used by individuals who may identify strongly with asexuality but may sometimes experience sexual desire and/or attraction and/or drive for a variety of reasons. Many see it as the grey area between asexual and sexual; however, this term is often included within the asexual spectrum.

–The Trans Language Primer[4]

Grey-asexuality and greyromanticism describes anyone who falls in some area between being asexual and sexual, or aromantic and romantic. This identity is especially idiosyncratic, as the experiences of grey-asexual/greyromantics can vary wildly. People who identify with either of these labels can include (but are in no way limited to), people who do not normally experience attraction but do sometimes, people who experience attraction but have a low sex drive, and people who can enjoy and desire sex or romantic relationships but under very limited and specific circumstances. The identities to follow can all fit underneath the grey-asexual or greyromantic labels if the person identifying with it chooses to.

–Morgan Pasquier, 2018[5]

But in fact there are many ways to be gray-A, and they don’t fall on a straight line. A gray-A can:

Experience sexual attraction only infrequently. Flip back and forth between experiencing sexual attraction and not, over a period of months. Experience sexual attraction very weakly. Experience attraction that may or may not be called sexual, since it shares some characteristics with sexual attraction, but not others. Experience sexual attraction only in specific and narrow circumstances. Be uncertain about whether they experience sexual attraction. Experience sexual attraction, but be missing some other important component, like sex drive.
