Gynesexual refers to sexual attraction to women exclusively. It also can be used as an umbrella term to describe any individual who is sexually attracted only to women.

Gynesexual has been historically used to describe exclusive sexual attraction mullerians or feminine sexual anatomy regardless of the target individual's gender identity. This definition is often viewed as transphobic/genitalist because many consider attraction to sex to be reducing individuals to their genitals. Attraction that is influenced by anatomy is generally considered a sexual preference rather than a sexual orientation, although not always, and individuals who identify with this definition may find imprisexual and/or gynesomatic to be a less controversial alternative. This definition is sometimes referred to as "gynephilia," however this term is outdated.

History[]

The term was possibly made with non-binary or genderqueer individuals in mind. However, many non-binary individuals prefer terms like finsexual, femaric, trixic, firamoric, or womasexual to describe this attraction, because gynesexual has no agreed upon definition, which can make its usage confusing, and it can have unfavorable connotations. The term gynesexual is commonly used by transphobic people as a reason to exclude transgender women because they are only attracted to "female anatomy" or "real women". Under this definition it reduces individuals to their genitalia, putting cisgender women and pre-surgery/transine transgender men in the same group because they have "female anatomy".

Etymology[]

The prefix "Gyne" is derived from the Greek "gynaika," meaning "woman."
