Sapphic is a sexual and/or romantic orientation describing a woman or genderqueer/non-binary individual attracted to women and/or queer/non-binary individuals.

One may be attracted to other genders as well, though not inherently; this term is generally used to describe WLW/NBLW attraction, but multi- labels such as bisexual or panromantic also fall under its umbrella.

Sapphic may also be used as a modifier to describe the prominence of one's attraction to women; for example, an omnisexual individual with a female/feminine preference may call themself a sapphic omnisexual.

Sapphic may also be used as a word describing a relationship between two women.

Etymology[]

The word sapphic comes from the name of the Greek poet Sappho. The island she was born on, Lesbos, is where the word lesbian is derived from.

Sapphic is also a type of poetry comprised of four line stanzas of similar meter. Sapphic poems are historically popular and written by individuals of all genders.
